Time and dates in French

You should learn the numbers, the days and the months before continuing on this page, when you understand those words, put them all together and make sentences to say the time and days of the week.

The table below contains more vocabulary to help you progress, you will then have example phrases and you can the try the translation exercises (easy and advanced level) near the bottom of this page.

Example phrases for times

7.30 am = Il est sept heures trente
8.40 am = Huit heures quarante
9.45 am = Neuf heures quarante cinq
Quarter to One = Une heure moins le quart
Quarter past two = Deux heures et quart
Half past three = Trois heures et demie (or) trois heures trente
10 to 4 = Quatre heures moins dix
20 to 5 = Cinq heures moins vingt
13.05 = Treize heures cinq
14.25 = Quatorze heures vingt cinq
15.30 = Quinze heures trente
16.42 = Seize heures quarante deux

Example phrases for dates and times

• Samedi, le premier (1^er) mai à neuf heures = Saturday 1st of May at 9 am.
• A midi, lundi le deux (2) juin = At midday, Monday the 2nd of June (and not the deuxième).
• Il est seize heures, le quinze (15) août. = It is 4.30 pm, the 15th August.

The French use the 24 hour clock in every day conversation, they will not say 1.00 pm, but 13.00, "treize heures".

For the days of the month, the only ordinal number used is for the first, 1^st ( premier, 1^er) day of the month, all other days use cardinal numbers. The week day and month names do not have a capital letter :
